for guests traveling from abroad, we recommend flying into santa cruz de la sierra (viru viru international airport – vvi). santa cruz will be the starting point for the wedding weekend before we make our way to samaipata.

there are three main options for flying to bolivia from the u.s.:
copa airlines — via panama city
avianca — via bogotá
boliviana de aviación (boa) — via miami

from europe
there are two main options for flying to santa cruz from europe:
air europa — direct from madrid
boliviana de aviación (boa) — direct from madrid

if you're traveling from elsewhere in europe, connecting through madrid is generally the easiest option.

when should i arrive?

most international flights arrive in santa cruz early in the morning.

since the wedding will take place in samaipata, about a 2.5–3 hour drive from santa cruz, we recommend arriving in bolivia on wednesday, april 21.

this gives you wednesday to settle in, recover from the trip, and explore a little of santa cruz before the wedding festivities begin.

we are planning activities beginning thursday, april 22, with group travel to samaipata on friday, april 23.

suggested for everyone flying into Santa Cruz - if you are visiting other parts of Bolivia before the trip - you can also look at La Paz as an option

on friday, april 23, we will provide transportation for all of our guests from santa cruz to samaipata.
the drive is approximately 3 hours, and we’ll share departure times and pick-up details closer to the wedding.

we will also provide transportation back to santa cruz on sunday, april 25 and monday, april 26.

please let us know whether you plan to fly home from santa cruz after the wedding or stay in bolivia to do some exploring, so we can coordinate return transportation accordingly.

no need to arrange your own transportation between santa cruz and samaipata.

if you've made it all the way to bolivia, you may as well come a little early?

there is so much to see beyond santa cruz and samaipata. if you have a few extra days before the wedding, here are a couple of our favorite options.

uyuni + the salt flats

the salar de uyuni is the world's largest salt flat and one of the most spectacular places in bolivia.

spend a few days exploring the salt flats and surrounding region before making your way to santa cruz for the wedding.

recommend stay: casa Gaston or salt hotel Uyuni

la paz + lake titicaca

another option is la paz and lake titicaca.

spend a couple of days exploring la paz before heading to lake titicaca, copacabana and, if you have time, isla del sol.

u.s. passport holders

as of september 2026, u.s. citizens do not need a tourist visa to visit bolivia.

bolivia changed its visa policy in december 2025, moving the united states into the group of countries whose citizens can visit bolivia for tourism without obtaining a visa.

because entry requirements can change, we recommend checking the latest requirements before traveling. we'll also update this page as we get closer to april 2027.

other passports

visa requirements depend on the passport you are traveling with. please check the requirements for your nationality before traveling.

things may change with exchange rate - sometimes better to have cash for blue market

bolivia's currency is the boliviano (bob or bs.).

as of september 2026, a good rule of thumb is about bs. 13 to $1 usd. exchange rates can fluctuate, so we'll share an update closer to the wedding.

credit and debit cards are accepted at many hotels, restaurants and larger businesses in santa cruz, but cash is still very common, particularly in samaipata and smaller towns. the street exchange rate for u.s. dollars is generally better than the rate offered by banks or when using international credit cards, so you may get more bang for your buck by bringing some u.s. dollars and exchanging them for bolivianos locally.

we recommend bringing some u.s. dollars in cash with you. you can generally exchange dollars for bolivianos in santa cruz, and exchange houses and other local options may offer a better rate than banks or the rate you receive when paying with a foreign credit card.

atms are also available, but international cards may be subject to withdrawal limits, fees and different exchange rates, so we wouldn't rely on them exclusively.

before we head to samaipata, we'll make sure everyone has an opportunity to exchange or withdraw cash in santa cruz.

we recommend staying in equipetrol, a central neighborhood with plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars and shops nearby.

our recommended hotel is los tajibos, where we are arranging a room block for wedding guests. we’ll share the booking link and group rate here once everything is finalized.

if you prefer to stay somewhere else, there are plenty of hotels and airbnbs in and around equipetrol. we recommend staying in this area so you’ll be close to the rest of the group and conveniently located for the wedding weekend.
getting to samaipata

on friday, april 23, we will provide group transportation from santa cruz to samaipata.

buses will depart from callejxn at approximately 11:00 am, with the goal of arriving in samaipata around 2:00 pm.

the drive takes approximately 2.5–3 hours. arriving around 2:00 pm will give everyone plenty of time to check in, settle into their accommodations, explore a little, or simply relax before the evening’s welcome dinner and festivities begin.

we’ll share final departure details and meeting instructions closer to the wedding.

we’ll also provide transportation back to santa cruz after the wedding, with options on sunday and monday depending on your onward travel plans.

we recommend staying at el pueblito or la víspera, two of our favorite places to stay in samaipata.

el pueblito is a charming hillside hotel designed to feel like a small bolivian village, with individual houses and rooms surrounded by gardens and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. we have reserved space here for our wedding guests, but guests will need to book their rooms directly with the hotel.

Finca La Víspera

Finca La Víspera is a collection of private cabins surrounded by gardens just outside the center of Samaipata.

It’s a great option for couples, families, or groups of friends who would like to stay together during the wedding weekend.

how will we get to the wedding?

we will have buses from the hotel and main square ready to bring you to the house. there will also be parking available for those driving. Please plan to arrive early if you need to park.
